Sport Literate to Celebrate 15th Anniversary
with Contests
In honor of 15 years of survival that’s survival bold, underscored, and italicized Sport Literate is producing an anniversary issue chock full of honest reflections on life’s leisurely diversions. What’s
more, the Chicago-based publication is offering cash money for a best essay and poem. Readers can purchase the $12 collective online. Writers looking to learn more can check out the guidelines on our web site. |

SL Editors Back to School
On the Friday afternoon before Memorial Day, Sport Literate editors William Meiners and Gina Vozenilek were back in school, specifically at Gary Comer College Prep on Chicago’s South Side, talking to freshman and sophomore students about sports, creative nonfiction, and writing for a living. 250 Takeaway
Bill here. I’ve been toying with these 250-word exercises that call for a sort of flash nonfiction. But they have to be 250 words exactly. Though Word counts hyphenated words as one word, I’m marking them for two here. Anyway, here’s my first timely take on the imperfection of man. I can muster one of these a month, or you can send me yours. Here you go. |

SL Elsewhere
Whether we find them, or they discover us, we’re on the lookout for those like-minded types who are looking at life through a sport literate lens. After our contest ad ran in the May issue of Poets and Writers, we heard from a Jewish female psychotherapist in New York who took up boxing. The experience led to her book, Blows to the Head: How Boxing Changed My Mind. You can check out Binnie Klein’s book trailer on You Tube. |

Second City Champions
Congratulations to the Blackhawks for bringing a world championship back to Chicago.
For Dave van Dyck’s take on the team’s surreal celebration before a cross-town, near-no-hitter game between the Sox and Cubs at Wrigley, check out Chicago Breaking Sports.
